PAKISTAN SUPER LEAGUE

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is one of the most popular professional T20 cricket leagues in the world. It was first introduced by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2016, and since then, it has become a fan-favorite. The league comprises six teams representing different cities in Pakistan, and it is held annually in February and March. In this article, we will provide complete information about the Pakistan Super League, its history, format, teams, players, venues, and more.

 History of Pakistan Super League

The idea of starting a T20 league in Pakistan was initially proposed in 2012. However, it took another four years for the PCB to launch the league. The inaugural season of PSL was held in 2016 in the UAE, as the league couldn't be held in Pakistan due to security concerns. Five teams participated in the first season, which included Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators. Islamabad United won the first edition of PSL, defeating Quetta Gladiators in the final.

The second season of PSL was held in 2017, also in the UAE. The league expanded to six teams, as the Multan Sultans were introduced as the new franchise. Peshawar Zalmi won the second edition of PSL, defeating Quetta Gladiators in the final.

The third season of PSL was held in 2018, and it was the first season to be partially held in Pakistan. Two matches were held in Lahore, while three matches, including the final, were held in Karachi. Islamabad United won their second PSL title, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final.

The fourth season of PSL was held in 2019, and it was entirely held in Pakistan for the first time. The league witnessed some exciting matches, and Quetta Gladiators won their first PSL title, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final.

The fifth season of PSL was held in 2020, and it was scheduled to be held entirely in Pakistan. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was suspended midway and later resumed in November. Karachi Kings won their first PSL title, defeating Lahore Qalandars in the final.

The sixth season of PSL was held in 2021, and it was also entirely held in Pakistan. The tournament was again suspended due to COVID-19 but resumed after a few days. Multan Sultans won their first PSL title, defeating Peshawar Zalmi in the final.

 Format of Pakistan Super League

The format of PSL is quite simple. The league follows a double round-robin format, where each team plays against each other twice. The top four teams on the points table then qualify for the playoffs. The playoffs consist of two qualifiers, an eliminator, and a final.

The first qualifier is played between the top two teams on the points table, and the winner of that match directly qualifies for the final. The second qualifier is played between the loser of the first qualifier and the winner of the eliminator. The winner of the second qualifier then faces the winner of the first qualifier in the final.
